Best Cycle Routes in and Around Matlock
With gorgeous countryside all around and cycle routes aplenty, Matlock is a great destination for avid cyclists. Here are some of our top cycle routes in and around the Matlock area.
5 Dales Route
A challenging route, this 35km bike ride is best done in the summer for its fantastic views of the local woodlands. The views from Beeley Moor are a particular highlight. On this route your abilities will be put to the test, particularly on the climb at Rowsley Bar (of National Hill Climbing Championship Fame!)
Cromford Canal Loop
Another expert cycle path, most certainly not for the faint hearted. This 44km mostly paved cycle path takes you from Matlock all the way past Belper and then back again.
Can you Cycle all Along the Cromford Canal?
Cromford Canal is very cyclable, however there may be some points where you will be required to dismount from your bike and push.
High Peak Trail
A 25km cycle route to Wirksworth which will take you through some of the best views the Peak District has to offer.
Kedleston Hall
For a family-friendly short bike ride, you can take the bikes to Kedleston Hall, a National Trust property with plenty of parkland and landscaped gardens. This is an 8km route and is suitable for all levels.
Tissington Trail
The Tissington Trail starts from Ashbourne and follows the former railway line 20km to Parsley Hay. The great thing about this route is that it’s flat and traffic-free making it perfect for family days out.
Matlock to Rowsley Cycle Path
The Matlock to Rowsley cycle path runs for 8km along the River Derwent. This accessible route is perfect for cyclists and walkers alike and boasts impressive views of the surrounding hills. Why not take a break at the ever popular Terrace Cafe at the halfway point?
Matlock to Chesterfield
There are a variety of ways you can cycle to Chesterfield from Matlock, this route takes a detour via Alfreton to make up a fairly challenging 32 km bike ride.
