Top Places to Drive to From Matlock

Although there’s no shortage of things to do in Matlock and the surrounding areas, we thought that we’d share some of our top recommendations which are just a short drive away from town. 

Alton Towers

Matlock is a great place to stay if you are planning on visiting Alton Towers but don’t want to splurge too much money staying at the resort. After a long day of dragging your little ones from rollercoaster to rollercoaster, you’ll appreciate coming back to somewhere peaceful that’s just a 45 minute drive away.

Bakewell

Home of the famous Bakewell tart, Bakewell is the most popular town in the Peak District to visit. Whilst you’re there you can visit the All Saints Church, the outdoor and livestock market or have a drink at one of the many pubs around Bakewell. If you’re traveling with kids you can take them to the Bakewell Recreation Ground to blow off steam with a football or a picnic. 

Finally, you can’t visit Bakewell without picking up a delicious Bakewell tart to take back with you!

Chatsworth House

Renowned for its quality of art and the beauty of the surrounding areas, Chatsworth House is an absolute must visit and only 20 minutes drive away from Matlock. With over 25 rooms to explore, there’s plenty to see!

Haddon Hall

A medieval tudor manor which overlooks the River Wye, Haddon Hall is wonderfully preserved. By car it’s just a 20 minute drive from Matlock. Perfect for spending a few hours with the family.

Hardwick Hall

Hardwick Hall is an Elizabethan country house located about 30 minutes away from Matlock by car. The fantastic architecture and beautiful gardens are well worth a visit if you are staying at Cotton House.

Meadowhall Shopping Centre

If shopping is your thing then Meadowhall Shopping Centre in Sheffield is an absolute must visit. With plenty of shops and restaurants, Meadowhall is one of Yorkshire’s best shopping centres and only 45 minutes away from Matlock.
