Best Dog Walks in the Peak District
With its picturesque views of the countryside, the Peak District offers a haven for dog walkers. With so many great dog walks to choose from it can be difficult to decide where you want to take your furry friend in the Peak District. To make things a little easier for you we decided to compile a list of our favorite dog friendly strolls around the Peak District.
Calver to Froggatt Loop
This riverside walk is perfect for dog walkers, and not just because it begins and ends at a pub! With great views, this walking route is well suited to family days out with the dog. The whole loop is around 2.5 miles so it should take you around 1 hour to do.
The Monsal Trail
The Monsal trail is perfect for dog walkers as it’s flat and traffic free. The full trail is a whopping 8.5 miles long so it’ll most likely be a bit of a struggle to walk the entire thing and back. Instead what you might opt to do is hop on the bus or train once you have finished back to where you parked the car. There are bus and train stations found throughout the trail so it’s totally up to you where you decide to start or end this walk. You may also even opt to take a slight detour and check out one of the towns on the way.
Solomon’s Temple
This walk is located near Buxton. The route begins at Poole’s Cavern car park and leads up through the woods to Soloman’s Temple. Solomon’s temple offers amazing views of the surrounding areas, however you’ll probably want to keep your dog on the lead up there as the temple is quite high up.
Thor’s Cave
Although a strange sight, Thor’s Cave offers some incredible views for you and your dog. This route starts in the village of Wetton, the route will take you up some 200 steps to reach the mouth of the cave. This is a slightly more challenging walk so we do recommend you bring some good footwear with you and to keep your dog on the lead throughout.
The Roaches
This walk can be found in the South of the Pennines and will take you up into the clouds. The route is in a figure 8 so if you aren’t quite up to doing the full thing you can easily circle back early. This walk shouldn’t be too challenging but we do advise you pack a set of wellies.
The Black Forest
If you’re looking for some woodland to take your dog to then look no further than the Black Forest. The trail is pretty uneven so it may be a bit of a challenge, however it’s worth it just to reach Lud’s Church chasm.
Mam Tor
This is a short circular walk that is very popular with dog walkers as it offers breathtaking views of the Peak District. The route begins and ends at Mam Nick car park and takes you through paved roads, stone steps and woodland.
Jacob’s Ladder to Kinder Scout
This 8.5 mile route will take you up the 650 meter Jacob’s Ladder before you arrive at Kinder Scout. This is a challenging walk that can last up to 5 hours, however it does offer some of the best views that the Peak District has to offer.
Dovestone Reservoir
Located at the very edge of the Peak District National Park, Dovestone Reservoir is a great place to take your dog and watch the boats roll by. Depending on which route you take this walk can be quite steep at certain points, however there are also wheelchair accessible trails as well.
Longshaw
Longshaw is a nice relaxing walk close to Padley Gorge. As this route is only around 4km, neither you nor your dog should find this route too challenging.
Monk’s Dale
Monk’s Dale is a dry gorge close to Buxton. This walk is only really available in the summer months as this is when the gorge is dry, during the winter months there is a stream which runs into the River Wye.
