Best Autumn Walks in the Peak District
The Peak District is beautiful at any time of year, though for many Autumn is the best time to enjoy the Peak District due to the beautiful colours and quiet country lanes. Here are some of our favourite Autumnal walking routes throughout the Peak District.
Wyming Brook Walk
This walk is just shy of 2 miles and takes you through the Wyming Brook Nature Reserve. The stunning scenery along this walk includes brooks, bridges and bridleways in a nice little loop around the area.
You’ll want to bring appropriate footwear for this walk as it can get quite slippery in some places. There are also no toilets along the route so you will want to go before starting. You should leave around 1 hour to finish this walk.
Curbar Edge
This rocky ledge has one of the best views of the entire Peak District, overlooking the village of Calver.
A mixture of rocky terrain and grassy areas, the area is perfect if you are looking for somewhere to relax and take in the scenery. If you are taking this route in Autumn, you will be treated to plenty of chestnut coloured ferns and heather. That said, you’ll want to wrap up warm as it can get quite windy at this time of year!
Lumsdale Falls
These waterfalls are located close to Matlock, and provide a wonderful setting for a nice Autumn walk. What’s more interesting about this walk is that it is packed with industrial history, being a part of the Arkwright Society. Eagle-eyed walkers will be able to spot old mill ruins along the route.
Mam Tor
Perhaps one of the most famous walking routes in the Peak District, the scenery at Mam Tor is especially beautiful in Autumn.
This route is not for the faint of heart as it winds up more than 500 metres, but the views are well worth the climb.
From Mam Tor you can very easily pay a visit and explore the village of Castleton, which is located nearby.
The Tissington Trail
The Tissington Trail takes you through tall trees and colourful fields which all look outstanding on a nice Autumn day. This trail follows a former 6-mile railway line. If you fancy a pint after this walk, we can recommend making a pit stop in Parwich village.
Padley Gorge
Located close to the village of Grindleford, Padley Gorge is in the East of the Peak District. The scenery here is spectacular all year round, however it is in Autumn when you truly can see the best colours.
Lyme Park
The stunning grounds of this stately home make for an incredibly romantic walk, featuring trails, woodlands and wild moorland.
Rudyard Lake and Bradwell Moor
This walking route is perfect for an Autumn day. Along this route you’ll pass old mine works and bumpy terrain. You’ll also be able to enjoy plenty of woodland scenery on this route.
Hathersage Fairy Woods
This 2 mile walk begins and ends in Hathersage. During Autumn this walk really shows off some of the beautiful colours that the Peak District has to offer. Along this route you’ll pass churches, woodlands and quiet country lanes.
This walk normally takes around 1 hour to complete, however with plenty of cafes and pubs along the way, feel free to do this walk at your own leisurely pace.
Derwent Reservoir
You may recall the Derwent Reservoir as the location where the Dambuster raids were practiced. However the reservoir is also home to plenty of gorgeous walking routes.
The Autumn weather brings out the spectacular colours around the Derwent Resevoir, perfect for if you are in the market for a new Instagram profile picture!
The Millennium Walkway
This 160m walkway which takes you around the Torrs offers some spectacular Autumn scenery, including the Torr Vale Mill, a grade II listed building along with the River Goyt.
Beresford Dale
You can find this tranquil location nestled in the Dove Valley close to Hartington. Here you can enjoy nice leisurely riverside walks while you take in the Autumn colours.
